Kenneth O. Preston (born February 18, 1957, in Mount Savage, Maryland) is a retired U.S. Army soldier who served as the 13th Sergeant Major of the Army. Appointed on January 15, 2004, he remains the longest-serving individual in that role, completing 7 years and 2 months before retiring in March 2011.
Preston enlisted in the Army in 1975 and graduated from Basic Training and Armor Advanced Individual Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Over his 36-year career, he held every key enlisted leadership position from cavalry scout and tank commander to Command Sergeant Major of units in the U.S. and Europe, including the 1st Armored Division, V Corps, and leading Combined Joint Task Force 7 in Baghdad.
As Sergeant Major of the Army, he was the senior enlisted advisor to the Chief of Staff, representing the enlisted force on issues like training, readiness, quality of life, and family support. He frequently traveled across the Army and testified before Congress on these topics.
A highly decorated NCO, Preston’s awards include the Army Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (with oak leaf cluster), Bronze Star, and numerous commendation and achievement medals.
After retirement, he remained active in service through the Army’s Retired Soldier Council and as Vice President for NCO and Soldier Programs at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA). He also contributed to nonprofits aiding wounded veterans, including Homes for Our Troops.
Kenneth is married to his hometown partner, Karen, both originally from Mount Savage, Maryland. They have three adult children Valarie, Kenneth Jr., and Michael and share ten grandchildren. Their family proudly accompanied him during the Marshall Medal presentation at the AUSA Annual Meeting in 2021, standing by his side as he was honored for distinguished service.
