A 65-year-old man from Alymer reported to the police that he met a woman online about two years ago, according to authorities in the town southeast of London. Following numerous online exchanges, the couple was married by proxy in the United States, despite never having met face-to-face.

During their two-year relationship, the man donated approximately $30,000 to the woman, believing it was for medical and various expenses, according to police.

The situation escalated when the man recently transferred $53,000 to a company suggested by his “wife” for home renovations, police reported.

The company and the person he contacted turned out to be part of the fraud orchestrated by the woman, said police.
