Lieutenant General William B. Caldwell IV (born January 24, 1954, in Columbus, Georgia, USA) is a retired United States Army officer and the 21st President of Georgia Military College (GMC). He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, earning a Bachelor of Science degree, and later earned a Master’s in Human Resource Management from Hawaii Pacific University and a Master’s in National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University. He also completed advanced military education at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and was a fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
General Caldwell served 37 years in the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of Lieutenant General and commanding several key units, including the 82nd Airborne Division, NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan, Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, and U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) at Fort Sam Houston. He participated in major operations such as Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Restore Hope, and Iraqi Freedom. His distinguished service earned him numerous awards, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Army Distinguished Service Medal (twice), Legion of Merit (twice), and the National Defense Service Medal.
After retiring from active duty in 2013, General Caldwell became President of Georgia Military College. Under his leadership, GMC expanded across Georgia with new campuses in Fayetteville, Dublin, Eastman, Albany, and Zebulon, as well as a robust online campus. These efforts have significantly increased enrollment and strengthened academic programs. In 2024, he was named to Georgia Trend’s “Georgia 500: Georgia’s Most Influential Leaders,” recognizing his contributions to education and leadership development. General Caldwell and his wife, Stephanie, actively support GMC initiatives for veterans, student leadership, and community engagement, reinforcing the college’s mission to develop leaders of character.
