Joseph Francis Dunford Jr. (born December 23, 1955, in Boston, Massachusetts) is a retired four-star U.S. Marine Corps General and senior military leader who served as the 19th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (2015–2019), the highest-ranking officer in the United States Armed Forces.

Raised in a traditional Irish Catholic family in Boston, Dunford graduated from Boston College High School before earning a bachelor’s degree in political science from Saint Michael’s College in 1977. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps the same year. To further his academic foundation, he later received a Master’s degree in Government from Georgetown University and another in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.

Nicknamed “Fighting Joe”, he gained recognition as a combat leader while commanding the 5th Marine Regiment during the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq. His unit played a central role in securing Baghdad, and Dunford’s leadership was praised for its effectiveness and care for his Marines.

Over a distinguished 42-year military career, he served in multiple senior commands:

  • Commander, NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and U.S. Forces–Afghanistan (2013–2014), where he oversaw coalition operations during a critical period of transition.
  • 36th Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps (2014–2015), leading more than 180,000 active-duty Marines and guiding force modernization.
  • Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps (2010–2012), focusing on training, readiness, and personnel policy.
  • Leadership of major units, including I Marine Expeditionary Force and Marine Forces Central Command.

As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Dunford was the principal military advisor to Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump. He was widely respected on Capitol Hill for his apolitical approach and strategic insight. Among his major contributions was the introduction of the Global Integration Framework, designed to synchronize U.S. military operations across combatant commands worldwide.

Following his retirement in 2019, Dunford transitioned into roles supporting national security and defense innovation. In 2020, he joined the Board of Directors at Lockheed Martin, one of the world’s leading aerospace and defense companies. He also became a Senior Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, contributing his expertise on global security, strategy, and leadership.

In May 2022, he joined the board of directors at Satellogic, an Argentine satellite company. Dunford is a member of the board of directors of Georgetown University.
